Art Collections: Books & Journals
The Art/Music Library houses approximately 75,000 books on visual arts, art theory, architecture and photography. It has an open stacks system, using the Library of Congress classification scheme. The only collections which are not browsable are the Reserve Collection, Locked Cage, and Folio sections.
Books and journals in most Western languages are collected. Most of the collection is in Class N (Fine Arts) of the Library of Congress classification. Within this class there are subdivisions by medium:
- N Visual Arts
- NA Architecture
- NB Sculpture
- NC Drawing
- ND Painting
- NE Print Media
- NK Decorative & Applied Arts
- NX Writings on the Arts

Using Voyager to locate Books & Journal Titles
Use Search Voyager Catalog to search by artist, movement, or subject in Basic or Custom Search. Most books classified in the "N" call number (Art) are housed in the Art/Music Library stacks. Books located at the Charlotte Whitney Allen Library of the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) are also listed in the Voyager Catalog. You may request books from the MAG at the Art/Music Library or through the Voyager Place Requests or you can go to the MAG and borrow directly.
