"Without the word, without the writing of books, there is no history, there is no concept of humanity." Hermann Hesse
The River Campus Libraries has a rich history that, in part, is told in the stories of its most loyal and dedicated supporters. The vignettes that accompany each endowed fund tell of a highly motivated group of people who shared a belief in the centrality of libraries to any vibrant academic community.
Our first endowed fund originated in 1857 with the establishment of the John F. Rathbone Fund. This and more than 100 other endowments of the Libraries have grown to become a substantial, irreplaceable part of our annual budget, advancing the breadth and depth of the collections that is necessary for a first rate research library.
