    UR Research varies
Since January 2008, all Ph.D. dissertations produced at the University of Rochester (including the Medical School and Eastman School of Music) are deposited in UR Research, the University’s institutional repository. Search or browse. If a file is noted as “Restricted access – try logging in,” your NetID and password will usually allow you to see it.

ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Full-Text Via ProQuest 1861 - current
Identifies Ph.D. dissertations from U.S. and Canadian universities since 1861. Abstracts from 1980. Many with full-text. To limit to UR work, put University of Rochester in one of the search fields and change the field being searched to School Name/code.

Finding UR Dissertations in print:

  • If you know the author or title: search the Voyager Catalog and note the location as well as the call number.
If you want to see dissertations from a particular UR department, you can search Voyager first to identify titles that might be interesting, or simply go to the appropriate library and call number range, and browse. Until 2007, the University of Rochester Libraries required graduating PhDs to supply two copies of their dissertation to the library.  One copy was, and continues to be, located in the appropriate subject library and can usually be borrowed. The second copy was deposited with the University Archives in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections; those copies are housed off-site. If necessary, the Archives copy can be retrieved and used in the reading room of the Department of Rare Books. Since the beginning of 2008, the electronic copy deposited in UR Research has become the archival copy of record. 2008-2010 marked a transition period; from 2011 doctoral students are only required to submit one hardcopy for the circulating collection.

  • To search Voyager:

university of rochester --> as a phrase --> in Thesis Institution
AND
department name --> (‘all of these’ or ‘as a phrase’)--> Thesis Institution
