  • Advanced Search

Advanced search enables you to build a more complex search including optional limits.

    To perform an Advanced Search:

    1. Enter the term(s) you want to find in the Search box. Note: You only need to include one search term (next to the red asterisk), however you can include more.
    2. Select all of theseany of these or as a phrase from the first drop-down list.
      • all of these - you want all the terms you've entered
      • any of these - when searching for synonyms
      • as a phrase - you want the terms to appear in the exact order that you have typed them
    3. Select the fields in which you want your search terms to appear from the drop-down list. Field choices include "keyword anywhere," "subject," "title," "author/name," "author/title," "ISBN," etc.
    4. To add more terms to your search, select either AND, OR, NOT with the next set. You may then type additional terms in the Search For box.
    5. Click the Search button to begin your search.

  • Basic Search

Use Basic Search to find books, journals & more.  Both traditional print and electronic format materials (many full text) are included in Voyager.

Keyword(s) search looks for all words in the search box. Don’t use AND, OR, NOT in your search.

    Ex: real estate bubble

To select an alternate search index (Author, Subject, etc.) use the drop-down menu.

After entering a term in the search box, you can limit your search to some of the more common limits by selecting from the drop-down Quick Limits menu.

    Quick Limit options include:

    Rush Rhees Library
    River Campus Libraries
    Memorial Art Gallery Library
    George Eastman House Library
    Swasey Library CRCDS
    Internet
    Book
    Journal
    DVD/Video
    Musical Recording
    English Language
    2006 and After

If you are looking for a limit that is not on the drop-down menu or you want to add multiple limits to your search, then choose the Advanced tab. Once you are in Advanced Search, you can add your search term(s) and then include any number of limits such as year, type, format, location and/or language. After selecting your limit(s), choose Search.

Note: You cannot apply limits to Author, Subject Heading or other browse searches.

Limiting after a search: Use the pop-up Limit your search box in the lower right corner of your results list to limit after a search. By selecting one of these quick limit options, your results list will be further refined by that particular limit. For example, if you searched the keyword 'global warming' and received several hundred titles, you may want to refine your results by adding the limit '2006 and After'. This will produce a smaller search results list with titles of materials published only since 2006. You can continue to refine your search results list with additional limits from the pop-up box.

In addition to the pop-up quick limit box, you can add more limits by selecting Edit Search. This will take you back to your original search screen with your saved search where you can add more limits and execute your search again. You will find all the limit options under Advanced search.
