Susan Brownell Anthony papers
Scope and Contents
The Susan Brownell Anthony Papers consist mainly of Anthony's letters to Harriet Taylor Upton, a prominent Ohio suffragist who spent much of her time working in political circles to secure the vote for women. Most of the letters were written between 1889 and 1893 and discuss Mrs. Upton's efforts to secure Congressional support for the cause of women's suffrage.
Also included in the collection are 11 postcards written by Rachel Foster Avery to Susan B. Anthony. In 1883 Anthony and Avery spent several months in Europe and while Avery toured the continent, Anthony mostly remained in Britain. Avery's postcards kept Anthony informed of her travels. Anthony wrote one of the postcards from Paris to her sister Mary in Rochester; later postcards are to Anthony and Ida Husted Harper from individuals in England and Europe.
A chronological list of all the correspondence is included in this register. All of the correspondence has also been indexed.
