Rush Rhees Reads: Into the Beautiful North

March 20, 2013 12:00pm - April 2, 2013 5:30pm

The River Campus Libraries are proud to co-sponsor Luis Alberto Urrea's upcoming campus visit. Urrea will be coming to Rochester as part of Writers & Books' annual "If All of Rochester Read the Same Book" event. This year's book is Urrea's 2009 novel, Into the Beautiful North, about a young Mexican woman's quest to save her town from thugs by bringing home the men who have left to work in United States.

Change of Venue:  Urrea will speak at the Hubbell Auditorium in Hutchison Hall on March 28th at 7:30 - 9:00 pm. The University Bookstore will sell copies of the book at the talk, and the author will be available to do a signing. The event is free and open to the public.

If you'd like to read and discuss the book before attending Urrea's talk, there will be several discussion groups:

"Rush Rhees Reads" will host 2 discussion sessions for undergraduates (with refreshments!):

- March 27 @ 5-6pm in the Hawkins-Carlson seminar room (off the main lobby of Rush Rhees)

- March 28 @ 5-6pm in the Gamble Room (on the 3rd floor of Rush Rhees)

For more information about the "Rush Rhees Reads" undergraduate book group, find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/RushRheesReads or email EileenD@library.rochester.edu

Following the discussion on Wednesday, March 27, there will be a screening of the film The Magnificent Seven which plays a central role in the novel. The screening will begin around 6:15 pm in the Hawkins-Carlson Reading Room.

Two students who participate in Wednesday’s book discussion will be selected to attend a private reception with the author and UR President Joel Seligman prior to Thursday night’s reading, courtesy of the Rochester Center for Community Leadership.
