Two iZone Student Employees Win Second and Third Place in Startup Competition

July 10, 2017

Dewey Bazirake '20 and Ian Manzi '18, student employees at the Barbara J. Burger iZone at the River Campus Libraries, won second and third places in Startup Weekend Social Impact New York this past June.

Startup Weekend NYC is an intense competition where diverse teams work together to create a social enterprise. The event’s main purpose is to teach skills that will help participants bring ideas to life by engaging with individuals from a wide variety of professional backgrounds.

Bazirake, whose team won second place, sought to develop a tool that would allow the redistribution of extra food from large restaurants to families in need. Manzi, whose team was placed third, focused on ways to encourage individual action around UN’s sustainability goals by creating an app that would gamify corporate green initiatives.

iZone is a collaborative hub where students explore ideas to create a social, cultural, community, or economic impact. Bazirake and Manzi’s experience and success at Startup Weekend NYC will help to inspire and bring ideas to future iZone programs.
