Nick Vamivakas

Dean of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, for the School of Arts and Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Science

Nick Vamivakas received his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering in 2008 from Boston University.  He is currently the Marie C. Wilson and Joseph C. Wilson Professor of Optical Physics in The Institute of Optics and the Dean of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, for the School of Arts and Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Science. Nick's research is focused on the intersection of quantum optics, nanophotonics and condensed matter physics.  He is interested in the fundamentals of light-matter interaction and how this translates to applications in quantum information science and optical technologies.  One specific interest is on the impact of nanophotonic optical devices in extended reality optical systems.   Nick has received a number of awards including the 2013 International Union of Pure and Applied Physics Young Scientist Prize in Quantum Electronics, 2016 National Science Foundation CAREER Award, 2018 Elected Fellow of the Optical Society of America, 2019 Rochester Engineering Society Kate Gleason Young Engineer of the Year Award, and the 2021 DARPA Directors Award.
