Purpose-Driven Pixels: Aligning Display Tech with XR Use Cases
The rapid evolution of XR headsets and AI glasses, driven mainly by multimodal AI agentic use cases has led to an explosion of micro-display technologies offerings, each presenting distinct optical trade-offs. However, hardware teams often fall into the trap of chasing raw spec-sheet metrics rather than designing for the actual consumer use case. We explore here how specific real-world use cases should dictate the architecture of the optical display stack. We will systematically break down the critical balances between form factor, thermal limits, power efficiency, and optical performance across various display and waveguide combinations. The use-case-driven framework should select the optimal display technology to deliver a purpose-built user experience.
