University of Rochester students called for a new space that would facilitate their exploration of ideas for social, cultural, community and economic benefit and provide an environment conducive to collaboration. In the fall of 2018, Rochester gave them the Barbara J. Burger iZone.

Earlier this month in Nashville, Tennessee, The Boy Who Lived became The Boy They Banned. According to a Washington Post article, a pastor at St. Edward Catholic School expelled the Harry Potter series on the counsel of several exorcists.

On May 17, 1963, the University of Rochester inaugurated its sixth president, W. Allen Wallis. In his inaugural address, Wallis invoked the ambitious and adventurous spirit of Captain James Cook.

His vision for Rochester students was one that had them seeking new horizons “driven by their own inner expectations and standard.” With this in mind, he offered that “To Each his Farthest Star” would make a fitting motto for Rochester—if it did not already have a fine one in Meliora.

Throughout her career, Louise Slaughter was known as an ardent advocate for the region that she represented. She was incredibly visible in her community, evidenced by her showing up at parades, attending fundraisers, and even helping to serve a holiday meal for those in need. We’re not sure when and where this photo was taken (the joys of going through archives!), but the expression on Louise’s face makes it clear that she truly cared about the people she represented.

It’s not easy living in an area that’s famous for its weather. You say you’re from or you currently live in western New York state, and usually the first thing non-locals think of is, well, snow. Being a congresswoman from this area, Louis Slaughter had to deal with a whole lot of snow, and hail, and sleet. Like most things Louise did, she faced the weather with a smile.

Exhibitions are among the many ways the University of Rochester Libraries provides windows into its extensive range of world-renowned collections. But they’re not just displays. An exhibition tells a story that is meant to enlighten, entertain, and engage, and in this way, they are also doors to further and more in-depth exploration. Constructing these narratives not only takes time, but they also require creative and intellectual work to weave assorted information and materials together.

What a year. We were barely into 2020 when the University’s River Campus closed, and when it reopened, it was under uncomfortable, challenging, and mentally exhausting conditions. Off-campus, almost every experience in our daily personal lives has been altered, if not entirely hijacked by the pandemic.

Do you have a publication that you would like to make freely available, expanding your impact, and really getting your work out there? 

Business, development, education, homelessness, housing, and job creation were important features of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter’s program for improving the district that she was elected to represent in the House of Representatives. Her constituency trusted her when she promised that she would do all within her power to bring federal funding to western New York to improve living conditions and standards and to support the many efforts of organizations and institutions that served the vulnerable.

The last Thursday in November may be synonymous with turkey, football, and family, but another celebration has become a standard part of many people’s calendars: Friendsgiving. Not an officially recognized holiday, Friendsgiving is a time to quite simply, celebrate and recognize those special individuals with who you share no familial relation.
